Neck Exercises: Who needs it?

Strengthening the neck muscles is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the most important exercises you can do for your body.

Who needs it? Nearly everyone. Who does it? Hardly anyone. With the exception of  extreme athletes who must protect their necks from the extreme stresses of athletic competition, few bother to include neck exercises as part of their workout program. But in order to maintain a healthy spine and body, it’s essential to develop healthy cervical (neck) alignment and muscular balance.

This is because the brain stem is protected by the upper part of the neck, and all neurological messages pass through this area on the way to and from the body. Actor Christopher Reeve’s traumatic riding accident, which resulted in a spinal-cord injury that left him a quadriplegic, demonstrates the importance of this area. By working toward strengthening the neck, we maximize our chances for 100% health, 100% of the time.
